Description
(RP=94) From a 50-year-old vineyard above La Tache, the 2005 Vosne-Romanee Champs Perdrix Vieilles Vignes ¡V bottled the week before I tasted ¡V offers aromas of cinnamon-, allspice-, and flower-scented ripe black cherry; a fabulously pure, refined, juicy black fruit concentration on the palate with subtly bitter undertones of fruit skin and dark chocolate; and a remarkably tactile sense of spice, chalk and fruit skin in its penetrating and protracted finish. One imagines how punching down the fermentative cap on fruit like this could easily red-line, whereas here the tannins are like spun steel and sharpness of focus and tight concentration go hand in hand with richness and refinement. (AG=91+) Deep ruby-red. Highly complex nose combines dark berries, mocha, minerals, leather, smoke, spices and underbrush. Sweet, supple and quite suave, with impressive smoky depth to its chewy flavor. But this is reduced if not downright musclebound today, only revealing a primary crushed fruit character with 24 hours in the recorked bottle. The wine's depth and density and its long finish with fully buffered tannins suggests it will repay extended aging. (AM=89-92) A touch of reduction detracts mildly from the otherwise spicy black and blue pinot fruit aromas that merge seamlessly into rich, full and supple flavors that possess very suave and ripe tannins with a firm mineral streak coming into play on the delineated and pure finish. This is easily of 1er quality and undeniably one of the better villages wines of the vintage. It's certainly worth a close look.
