Description
(JS=91) Beautifully perfumed with hints of lavender, black berry and licorice. Full body, firm and silky texture. Tar and blueberry character. Second wine of Valandraud. Drink in 2018. (RP=90) Two of the best efforts I have tasted from Jean-Luc Thunevin, the 2010 Virginie de Valandraud (A 2,500-case blend of 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc) has loads of chocolaty black raspberry fruit intermixed with some currants, crushed rock, subtle smoke and white chocolate. This is a sexy, up-front beauty to drink over the next 10-15 years. (AG=89-92) The 2013 Virginie de Valandraud shows lovely depth for the year. Resonant and generous on the palate, the 2013 impresses for its pure volume, something that was very hard to come by in this vintage. Dark red cherries, raspberry jam, plums, tobacco, smoke and new leather linger on the caressing, inviting finish. What a pretty wine this is. Like all of the Valandraud wines in 2013, the key word here is balance. Virginie de Valandraud is approximately 70% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon and dollops of Malbec. Tasted twice.
