(RP=93-94) As if there were not enough stony minerality in the Pruliers, the 2005 Nuits-St.-Georges Les Cailles lives up to its name, tasting as though its fruit had been macerated on cherry pits and pebbles. Its bitter-sweetness extends to notes of vanilla and chocolate that accent a deep black fruit concentration. Vivid, palpable density and old vines creaminess on the palate lead to a richly fruited but not at all superficially sweet, deeply meaty, and decidedly chalk- and stone-inflected finish of amazing refinement and penetration, indeed of Grand Cru length. (AM=92-94) A superbly complex and deeply pitched nose of spicy dark berry fruits and lovely floral notes, particularly violet, precede the rich and quite naturally sweet flavors blessed with ample old vine intensity and palate saturating extract yet for all the inner mouth fireworks, this remains classy, refined and strikingly long. This is so well balanced and carries its firm structure so effortlessly that it will easily age for 20 to 30 years but should be ready in 12 to 15. In a word, terrific. Note: 75 year old vines. (AG=91+) Saturated, deep ruby-red. Liqueur-like black raspberry, blackberry and licorice aromas retain good freshness. Very large-scaled and dense, with superripe berry, licorice and chocolate flavors offering superb depth and sweetness. Perhaps a bit monolithic and powerful for a wine from this cellar, but obviously youthfully clenched today. The big tannins saturate the teeth. I'd put this away for a decade.
